New Year’s Resolution or Goal Setting 2017? -Personal Trainer Toronto

Mike Here,

Happy New Year to you and yours. May this year (2017) bring you all that you hope for and MORE.

For some people the start of a new year mean`s cleaning the slate or starting over fresh. For other`s it means business as usual.

I`ve been working in the fitness industry for over 10 years. Every year I can’t help but notice a big increase in attendance at my local gym facility in January. As February, March, April come along I then start to notice a decrease in attendance. I believe the dip in attendance has a lot to do with “The Big Hype” in the beginning of the year. Have you witness this at your local gym?

This “Big Hype” can somewhat be blamed on big businesses who try to market or promote a service or product using exaggerated or intensive publicity. A lot of us fall victim to these tactics every day and every year. One of the best ways to combat this is to understand the meaning and the power of SETTING GOALS.

What are some benefits or advantages of SETTING GOALS?

  • Helps to keep you focused on a particular thing

  • Give`s you great purpose to life

  • Enables you to be more organized

  • Better time management

  • Keep`s you motivated

  • Prioritize things better

  • Can be used as a guideline

  • Gives you a straight path to follow

  • Helps you to be responsible for your failures or success`s

  • Adds clarity to your thoughts or vision

Let me give you an example. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Vancouver and the western part of Canada. Someday in my life time I’d like to take a road trip out west to see how beautiful western Canada is. This trip is possible because I know a few people who have done it. They`ve said it can take anywhere from 5-7 days depending on how you drive. What important item do you think I’d need for this long journey? If you guest “road map” your correct.  A road map is a plan or strategy intended to achieve a particular goal. Can you imagine the chaos id be in if I didn’t have a road map? Some of us are living out are lives without following or having a road map. Having a road map can help you see the end goal, enable you to use your time efficiently and limit missed or wrong turns. At time`s you may find yourself driving off course but guess what. You have your map to help get you back on track.

In the past I’ve ran split tests with my clients during certain periods throughout the year. Their programs are individualized and tailored towards the needs of each individual. Each program has phases with weekly/quarterly or yearly goals. I’ve noticed whenever an immediate goal is implemented during a session. The client instantly gets motivated to achieve it. An immediate goal could be time based, distance based, repetition based, strength based or based on flexibility. Setting daily nutrition goals would also be a big key to your success.

I encourage you in 2016 to set realistic goals for yourself. Once you`ve achieve them set new goals. This way you always have something to look forward during the year and not just the traditional new year`s resolution. Remember, achieving these goals won`t come easy. If you have a setback, take a wrong turn or get off track just remind yourself to find your road map and stay on course.

What are some goals that you’ve set and achieved in 2016? I’d like to hear about them. Feel free to leave your comment below.
