5 Benefits of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

5-benefits-of-high-intensity-interval-training-hiit -online personal trainingHigh intensity interval training (HIIT) has been proven to deliver significant health benefits with just 3-5 interval training sessions per week. This type of exercise effectively burns more calories in a 15-30min cardio workout than a boring 1 hour workout on a treadmill. It involves working out in short, brief bursts of intense activity alternated with periods of less strenuous activity, or no activity at all. In 2011 a study was introduced at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine which indicated that two weeks of HIIT is enough to increase aerobic capacity as much as if not more than 6-8 weeks of endurance training.

In addition to these impressive benefits, here are 5 of the top perks of participating in a routine of high intensity interval training:

1. HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING STRENGTHENS THE HEART

The anaerobic zone is the point in your exercise routine where breathing requires some serious effort and your heart is working so hard it feels like it’s going to leap right out of your chest. This is when some people decide that exercise just isn’t worth the effort. That’s unfortunate, because it is at this point that HIIT will begin to produce some extreme results. The lungs, heart, and chest muscles are being strengthened like with no other exercise regimen. A 2006 study indicated that 8 weeks of HIIT workouts enabled test subjects to ride a bicycle twice as long as they were able to prior to participation in the study, while also maintaining the same pace.

2. THE BODY’S METABOLISM IS INCREASED, BURNING MORE FAT

A round of high intensity interval training gives the metabolism a boost that will last for hours after the workout is finished. This occurs because during high intensity exercise the body uses more oxygen than regular, more steady exercise routines. Increasing the body’s oxygen intake helps the metabolism to work longer and more efficiently. When the body’s metabolism works super-efficiently, more calories are burned off, and when more calories are burned away, there are less of them for the body to retain and store away as fat. Studies have indicated that with a regular workout regimen, more calories are burned (and therefore more weight is lost!) by participating in shorter, higher-intensity workouts rather than slower, steady cardio workouts.

3. (HIIT) HELPS CONTROL APPETITE

Many people shy away from exercising because of the myth that working out increases the appetite. Research has suggested that the opposite is actually true. A study conducted by the University of Western Australia found that a hunger-stimulating hormone called Ghrelin is actually suppressed by regular participation in high intensity interval training workouts. Test subjects reported a significant decrease in appetite for up to several hours after HIIT exercise.

4. (HIIT) DECREASES FAT, NOT MUSCLE

It is not uncommon for people who are participating in exercise routines to also be dieting. It can be easy when dieting and exercising to lose muscle mass along with fat. Steady cardio workouts especially seem to increase loss of muscle mass. However, weight training combined with high intensity interval training have been proven to preserve muscle while effectively burning fat.

5. (HIIT) CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, ANY TIME

High intensity interval training doesn’t require any special equipment and is done quickly. This makes it super easy to fit in an effective workout virtually anywhere in just a few minutes a day. No gym membership is necessary.

High intensity workout videos are available, so you can choose your favorite one(s) and be ready to get your sweat on anywhere and any time. Cleaning the house?
